TECHNIQUES FOR BOND KNITTING Open cast on hem 1. Bring forward the required needles, (stitches) centered on the machine, placing the green cards behind the needles. (The green cards stay until step 8). 2. Insert the rods into the hem and center it over the extended needles. 3. Insert each needle through a slot in the hem and fold the top half back on the machine. 4. Open all latches. 5. Place a length of elastic, weighted on each end by a clip, along the needle hooks. 6. Fold the top half of the hem down so that it hangs between the needles on the elastic. 7. Push the hem all the way back against the machine. 8. Replace the green cards with the yellow card, pushing the needles back against it to set the needles to knit the first row. 9. Remove the yellow card and check that all latches are open. E-wrap cast on 1. Beginning on left end with knitting yarn, tie a loose knot around first needle to be knit. 2. Bring yarn under next needle and then up around it encircling it loosely as if making a letter e. 3. Repeat across row. Move these loops behind latches. Make sure latches are open. 4. Place carriage on machine on side of last needle ewrapped and thread yarn through carriage. 5. Follow steps 2 through 9 of open cast on hem. Back Stitch bind off with sewing needle 1. Thread needle with yarn 3 times as long as needles to be bound off. 2. Insert needle in first stitch (front to back) on left side and pull through. 3. Insert needle in 2nd stitch and pull through first stitch. 4. Insert needle in 3rd stitch and pull through 2nd stitch. 5. Continue across going through last stitch twice and removing stitches from machine. Knitting together seams 1. Bring forward the required number of needles. 2. Using the single transfer tool, pick up one at a time the last row of main color stitches of the knitting, (not waste yarn) and place on the needles, right side of knitting facing you. 3. Push these stitches back behind the latches. 4. With the wrong side of the knitting facing you, repeat step 2, placing these stitches on the same needles, leaving these stitches in the needles hooks. 5. Push the needles back by hand so that the back stitches knit onto the front stitches. 6. Back stitch bind off. Binding off 1. Starting at the side that has the yarn attached, transfer the end stitch on top of the next stitch in and push back both stitches behind the latch. 2. Loop the yarn over the needle hook, in the direction of the binding off. 3. Push the needle back all the way, knitting the two stitches together. 4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 across row, making the loop stitch slightly larger to prevent a tight bind off. Picking up live stitches by hand 1. Pick up one stitch at a time of main color yarn with tip of knitting needle, slowly unravel waste yarn. 2. Pick up hem stitches as above except it will be necessary to cut the waste yarn. *HELPFUL TIPS* *At the beginning of every row, pull enough yarn loose from the skein to knit the entire row. Failure to do so will result in tightly knit stitches that will not block out and will make the next row difficult to knit. *At the beginning of each row, pull the yarn taut while you line up the carriage with the first needle to be knit, and then release the yarn. Knit the row. *Whenever changing yarn, place a clip on the tail of the yarn after knitting 1 row. *If hem reaches the floor as you knit, roll it into the knitting to keep tension on the stitches. *For better looking decreases, using the 2 prong tool, transfer 2 stitches over 1 space so that the decrease is 1 stitch in from edge.
