Size: S( 3 1/2" across), M ( 4 1/2" across)
Gauge: 4 sts = 1” Keyplate 3dot, Bulky: Tension 7.
Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn:70(100)yds main color and 50(75) yds contrasting color yarn.
Plastic container (We used a 2 cup clear container for the medium basket and an 8 oz. margarine container for the small basket).
Thin wire (we used 22 gauge) or pipe cleaner for medium basket.
.

  1. With waste yarn, open cast on 39(59) sts.  Knit a few rows then change to contrasting color yarn.  Row counter at zeros.
  2. Knit 5(6) rows.  Transfer every other stitch to adjacent needle.  Leave empty needles in working position.  Knit to row counter 10(12).
  3. With transfer tool, pick up stitches of row 1 and place on corresponding needles.  Place needles in Forward working position.  Knit row.
  4. Cut contrasting yarn and change to main color yarn.  Row counter at zeros.  Knit to row counter 20(26).
  5. Cut yarn leaving a 12" tail.  Thread needle with tail yarn and thread through stitches on machine, starting at opposite end.
  6. Remove stitches from machine and remove hem or weights.  Pull up tail yarn gathering bottom of basket. Secure gathered stitches and sew side seam.  Weave in any ends.
  7. Make 3(5) stitch i-cord (directions can be found in our strawberry hat pattern), 11(15) inches long.
  8. Thread pipe cleaner or plain wire through 5 stitch i-cord for stability.
  9. Sew handle to sides of basket at side edging.
  10. Insert plastic container.
  11. Repeat steps 1 through 9 for other side of purse.
  12. Make 3 st I-cord 60" long. (I-cord directions can be found on our strawberry hat pattern).

To make any size basket:
Measure around the opening of the container.  Multiply that measurement by 4.  Add 1 to get to an odd number.
That is the number of stitches to cast on.
Measure from the center bottom of the container to the top.  Multiply that measurement by 5.
That is the number of rows to knit after you have knit the edging.
Happy Spring!
